Jones, 31, is a nine-year veteran who specializes as a kick and punt returner. In a corresponding move, the Steelers released running back/receiver Dri Archer.

Jones was released by the Chargers earlier this week. He returned five punts for -4 yards and nine kickoffs for 193 yards this season. He has returned five kickoffs and four punts for touchdowns in addition to 4,720 kick return and 2,669 punt return yards in his career.

In November 2013, while a member of the Baltimore Ravens, Jones was returning a kick when Steelers coach Mike Tomlin appeared to attempt to trip him along the sidelines, although his intent was unclear.

The Steelers had been using Archer as their primary kick returner, and star receiver Antonio Brown to return punts this season.
