New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick will undergo thumb surgery on Friday, head coach Todd Bowles told reporters after Thursday’s 22–17 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Fitzpatrick is not expected to miss any games.

On Sunday, Fitzpatrick was unsure if surgery would be necessary. “I don't know. It's still kind of up in the air,” Fitzpatrick told reporters after the 28–23 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Fitzpatrick injured the thumb on his non-throwing hand in Week 7’s 34–20 loss against the Raiders. Geno Smith came in to replace Fitzpatrick, but Fitzpatrick was forced to return after Smith got hurt.

Fitzpatrick has been wearing a protective glove on his hand during practices and games.

The Jets (5–4) will face the Texans on the road on Nov. 22.
