San Francisco 49ers place Colin Kaepernick on injured reserve
The San Francisco 49ers have placed quarterback Colin Kaepernick on injured reserve, ending his season.
Kaepernick told the 49ers he wanted to have surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Kaepernick was benched after the 49ers’ 27–6 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 1. Blaine Gabbert started at quarterback in a Nov. 8 win over the Falcons.
The quarterback has struggled for San Francisco this season, posting a 78.5 passer rating, the worst of his career. Dylan Thompson was promoted from the practice squad to take Kaepernick’s place on the 53-man roster.
• Aaron Rodgers limited in practice with right shoulder injury
The 49ers signed Kaepernick, a 2011 second-round pick, to a six-year, $114 million contract extension in June 2014. San Francisco can release Kapernick in the upcoming off-season and owe him less than $8 million moving forward.
In nine games this season, Kaepernick threw for 1,615 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions.
