The San Francisco 49ers have placed quarterback Colin Kaepernick on injured reserve, ending his season.

Kaepernick told the 49ers he wanted to have surgery on his non-throwing shoulder, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Kaepernick was benched after the 49ers’ 27–6 loss to the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 1. Blaine Gabbert started at quarterback in a Nov. 8 win over the Falcons

The quarterback has struggled for San Francisco this season, posting a 78.5 passer rating, the worst of his career. Dylan Thompson was promoted from the practice squad to take Kaepernick’s place on the 53-man roster.

Aaron Rodgers limited in practice with right shoulder injury

The 49ers signed Kaepernick, a 2011 second-round pick, to a six-year, $114 million contract extension in June 2014. San Francisco can release Kapernick in the upcoming off-season and owe him less than $8 million moving forward.

In nine games this season, Kaepernick threw for 1,615 yards with six touchdowns and five interceptions.
