Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons, head coach Ron Rivera said Thursday.

Stewart is recovering from a sprained foot he sustained during Carolina’s 38–0 win over the Falcons in Week 14. He did not play against the New York Giants last Sunday.

Stewart has rushed for 989 yards on 242 carries and six touchdowns this season and leads the team in rushing yards. Rookie Cameron Artis-Payne led the team with 14 carries for 59 yards in Stewart’s absence last week, and quarterback Cam Newton carried eight times for 100 yards.

The injury could perhaps be more severe than Stewart initially believed. After the win over the Falcons on Dec. 13, the running back said he would have returned to the game had his team not be ahead by such a large margin.

The Panthers remain undefeated at 14–0 entering Sunday.
