New Orleans Saints retain head coach Sean Payton
The New Orleans Saints will retain head coach Sean Payton.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network was first to report the news.
“This is where I plan on coaching. I don’t envision myself coaching for any other club,” Payton said in a press conference on Wednesday.
The head coach is under contract until the end of the 2017 season, which opened up the possibility of trading him for a second-round NFL draft pick. In Feb. 2014, the Cleveland Browns nearly traded with the San Francisco 49ers for then-head coach Jim Harbaugh.
Payton was hired by New Orleans in 2006 after serving as an assistant coach with the Eagles, Cowboys and Giants. He led the Saints to their lone Super Bowl victory in 2009 with a win over the Indianapolis Colts.
In his nine seasons at the helm in New Orleans, Payton compiled an 87–57 record. The Saints finished the 2015 season with a 7–9 record for third place in the NFC South division but failed to clinch a playoff berth for the third time in the last four seasons.
