Report: 49ers fire DC Eric Mangini

The 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Eric Mangini after one year on staff.

The San Francisco 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Eric Mangini after one year as defensive coordinator, according to FOX Sports' Alex Marvez. 

Mangini signed on to replace Vic Fangio, who took a job with the Chicago Bears after the departure of Jim Harbaugh to Michigan. Mangini coached for two years under Harbaugh as an offensive assistant. 

Mangini previously served as a head coach with the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns. He also served as a defensive assistant for the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick

The 49ers finished the season 5–11 for last place in the NFC West. Head coach Jim Tomsula was fired on Jan. 3. Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly was hired as his replacement.
