Former Saints running back Pierre Thomas said “the last few days have been a whirlwind” after he witnessed the fatal shooting of former teammate Will Smith.

Smith, 34, was shot to death in New Orleans on Saturday night after traffic accident and pronounced dead at the scene. The alleged shooter, 28-year-old Cardell Hayes, was arrested on second-degree murder charges and held on $1 million bond.

Thomas wrote about witnessing the shooting in a Facebook post. (The post contains strong language.)

Times-Picayune photographer captured an image of Thomas at the scene of the crime early Sunday morning. 

Thomas and Smith played six seasons together with the Saints, from 2007 to 2012. Thomas also played in New Orleans in 2013 and 2014, and spent last season with the 49ers and Redskins.
