Chargers take Arkansas tight end Henry in 2nd round

SAN DIEGO (AP) The San Diego Chargers added yet another tight end to their roster, taking Hunter Henry in the second round of the NFL draft Friday.

The Chargers then used their third-round pick on Southern Cal's Max Tuerk, who will compete for the starting center job once he's completed rehab from knee surgery.

''I was really hoping the Chargers would pick me,'' said Tuerk, who great up in Orange County. ''It's a dream come true for me.''

Tuerk missed half of the 2015 season with a right knee injury. He also played guard and tackle at USC.

''The knee's feeling great right now,'' he said. ''It's about six and a half, seven months right now since surgery. It's feeling strong. I've been running. No limitations in the weight room.''

General manager Tom Telesco said the team's doctors feel good about where Tuerk's knee is and the long-term prognosis.

''He still has some rehab to do,'' Telesco said. ''Once we get him here, get our hands on him every day, we'll have a better determination of when his start date will be, when he's ready to go. He certainly will be competing for a spot.''

He'll compete with Chris Watt and Trevor Robinson for the starting spot.

Henry caught 116 passes for 1,661 yards and nine touchdowns in 38 career games.

He was a consensus first team All-American and John Mackey Award winner as the nation's top tight end after setting career-highs with 51 receptions and 739 yards, with three touchdowns. He had no recorded dropped passes in 2015.

''For us, he's a first-round talent,'' Telesco said. ''He comes from a pro-style offense at Arkansas so he plays on the line of scrimmage, he's asked to block and he does it pretty well. But his game is the passing game and getting downfield. He runs well.''

The Chargers now have six tight ends on their roster. Star tight end Antonio Gates is under contract for two more seasons.

On Thursday, the Chargers selected Ohio State defensive end Joey Bosa with the third pick overall.
