The Lions defensive coordinator put a face on the failures of the Rooney Rule this summer when he implied that two of his four head-coaching interviews were not legitimate. Teryl Austin, who is black, did not go so far as to accuse those teams of paying lip service to the Rooney Rule, but he contributed toward a growing sentiment that more must be done to create legit coaching opportunities for minorities in the NFL.
