The 49ers (8-1) were the last of the unbeatens in the NFL this season until Monday night’s 27-24 overtime loss at home in a slugfest with the Seattle Seahawks. San Francisco had its chance to win in the extra period, but kicker Chase McLaughlin—filling in for the injured Robbie Gould—badly pulled a 47-yarder with 3:10 left.
The 49ers defense failed to contain Russell Wilson on the ensuing drive, with the Seahawks quarterback picking up 18 yards on a key third-down scramble. Jason Myers drilled a 42-yard field goal as time expired, sending San Francisco to its first loss and tightening the NFC West race by pulling within 1 ½ games of the 49ers.
The physical game took its toll on the 49ers. Already playing without star tight end George Kittle, they also lost top wide receiver and recently acquired Emmanuel Sanders to a rib injury late in the first quarter. Sanders is questionable for this contest pending an MRI, but his absence was glaring. San Francisco had 108 yards in its first two possessions while bolting to a 10-0 lead and had just two field goals and 194 yards the rest of the game.Deebo Samuel did step up with eight catches for 112 yards, but fellow wideouts Marquise Goodwin and Dante Pettis failed to make a reception on six targets between them.
Wilson flustered the defense time and again as Seattle converted 7 of 15 third down plays and finished with 336 yards—the second-highest total San Francisco has allowed this season. Kyler Murray and Arizona hold that distinction with 357 yards, as the Cardinals (3-6-1) gave the 49ers all they could handle before losing, 28-25, in Week 9.
The No. 1 overall pick almost got the Cardinals back on track last Sunday in Tampa Bay, but lost a 30-27 shootout to the Buccaneers. Murray finished with 324 passing yards and three touchdowns through the air, giving Arizona a 27-23 lead midway through the fourth quarter that the defense failed to protect.
It was Murray’s fourth 300-yard game of the season, and all 12 of his touchdown passes have come in five games, as he matched a personal best set in Week 6 against Atlanta. Murray has thrown for 2,553 yards, while completing 63.9 percent of his passes and has been picked off five times.
Jimmy Garoppolo threw for 317 yards and four scores in the win at Arizona on Oct. 31, with Sanders and Kittle combining for 13 catches, 191 yards and two touchdowns. After Murray’s 88-yard touchdown pass to Andy Isabella brought the Cardinals within three, Garoppolo and the offense were able to run out the final 4:53.
San Francisco is seeking its first season sweep of Arizona since 2013, with last month’s win snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Cardinals.
