Chiefs Sign Former Buccaneers OT Donovan Smith, per Report

The Chiefs and former Buccaneers offensive tackle Donovan Smith agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $9 million, according to ESPN’s Adam Teicher.

NFL Network was the first to report the financial value of Smith’s deal. Smith, who was released by Tampa Bay on March 7 as part of the franchise’s efforts to remain under the league’s salary cap, joins a Chiefs franchise that completed an overhaul of its offensive line.

Former offensive tackle Orlando Brown signed with the Bengals while Andrew Wylie signed a three-year, $24 million deal with the Commanders in March. As a result, during the NFL’s free agency period, Kansas City signed former Jaguars offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor to bolster the Chiefs offensive front.

In addition to Taylor, the Chiefs have three others tackles—Lucas Niang, Prince Tega Wanogho and Darian Kinnard—who served a backups during the 2022 season. Kansas City also added Oklahoma offensive lineman Wanya Morris to the mix, selecting him in the third round of the 2023 NFL draft.

Smith was drafted by the Buccaneers in 2015. During his time in Tampa Bay, he started in 124 regular-season games. However, in the ’22 campaign, he missed four games because of elbow and foot injuries.
