NFL Signs Roger Goodell to Multi-Year Contract Extension

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. The league announced Tuesday that the longtime leader has signed a multi-year extension. 

“The Compensation Committee updated the full ownership today that an agreement has been reached to extend Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract for three years, through March 2027,” the Wednesday press release read. 

Goodell, 64, has been the NFL’s commissioner since 2006 and there are some within the league that believe this is his last deal, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Goodell’s predecessor, Paul Tagliabue, stepped down at 65. Before him, Pete Rozelle walked away from the job when he was 63, putting Goodell right in that window. 

It’s unclear how much the extension is worth at this time. In Oct. 2021, The New York Times reported that Goodell made an average of $63,900,050 per year in 2019–20 and 2020–21, bolstered by significant bonuses after the league secured media and labor deals. 

With the 2023 season well on its way, Goodell is in the midst of his 18th season as commissioner and it appears he will spend at least 21 seasons at the helm of the NFL.
