Cowboys to Keep Mike McCarthy Heading Into 2024 Season, per Report

After days of speculation, the Dallas Cowboys have made a decision on the future of coach Mike McCarthy following Sunday’s 48–32 wild-card loss to the Green Bay Packers.

The Cowboys will retain McCarthy for another year entering the 2024 season, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday. The ’24 campaign will be McCarthy’s fifth with the franchise since being hired in January 2020.

Shortly after the news, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones issued a statement confirming the decision while doubling down on the trust team brass has in McCarthy despite the rumors of a change at the position.

“I believe this team is very close and capable of achieving our ultimate goals and the best step forward for us will be with Mike McCarthy as our head coach,” Jones said. “There is great benefit to continuing the team’s progress under Mike’s leadership as our head coach. Specifically, there are many layers of success that have occurred this season as a result of Mike’s approach to leading the team, both with individual players and with our team collectively.

“We will dedicate ourselves, in partnership with him, to translating that into reaching our post season goals.”

Wednesday’s reported decision will keep things status quo for Dallas under McCarthy, who will now head into the last year of his contract.

Prior to the announcement, Dallas, despite finishing 12–5 for a third-straight year, had been subjected to rumors regarding McCarthy’s future after an embarrassing loss to his old team. Now, instead of preparing for a do-over, the Cowboys will prepare to run it back under McCarthy’s leadership after another underachieving postseason run.

Over four seasons in Dallas, McCarthy has led the Cowboys to a 42–25 record, but has yet to advance past the divisional round of the playoffs.
