Panthers Kick Off Overhaul by Promoting Former Linebacker to General Manager

The Carolina Panthers announced Monday that they’ve promoted Dan Morgan to the role of president of football operations and general manager.

The team promoted from within in order to restructure the front office. Morgan had previously been the assistant GM for the Panthers over the past three years.

Morgan was a first-round pick by Carolina back in 2001, and he played his entire career for the franchise, spanning 59 games from ‘01-‘07. He featured in the team’s Super Bowl XXXVIII loss against the New England Patriots, during which he logged a Super Bowl record 18 tackles.

Prior to rejoining the Panthers’ organization, Morgan had worked as an intern for the Seattle Seahawks in 2010, where he worked his way up the ranks until he was named director of pro personnel. In 2018, he joined the Buffalo Bills as the director of player personnel. He was hired by Carolina as assistant GM in 2021, and a few years later is set to step into the role of GM.

“Dan has a thorough knowledge of our football personnel and a clear vision to take us where we all want to go,” said team owner David Tepper in a statement on Monday. “We know he will attack this opportunity with the same intensity he did as a Panthers player.”

Morgan will likely play a role in the team’s head coaching search, after the Panthers parted ways with Frank Reich in November, less than one full season into his four-year contract. Their next hire will be the team’s third coach in its last four seasons, excluding interim coaches.
