Kyle Shanahan Seems to Think Highly of Baker Mayfield

In this story:
SANTA CLARA -- Kyle Shanahan speaks in code when it comes to quarterbacks.
He always praises the opposing QB. But if Shanahan talks about his raw talent, he probably doesn't really respect his game. If Shanahan points to his skill, he probably admires the quarterback. That's the way I see it.
Last week when asked about Trevor Lawrence, Shanahan fawned over his height, his arm strength and his ability to scramble. Translation: He doesn't know how to play the position in the NFL.
This week, I asked Shanahan about Baker Mayfield, whom the 49ers will face on Sunday. Here's what Shanahan said: "You watched him last week, I mean, how decisive he was, how he gets rid of the ball. Every time they had the right look on that. He had zero hesitation when he had the wrong look on. He didn't hesitate. He progressed and didn't sit there and wait on some bad things. He's been getting rid of the ball as fast as anyone in this league, not taking sacks. I think he only has four turnovers. When he also is not scared to let it go at all. He can throw that ball, he can take three hitches and throw it late 60 yards down the field. He also has a knack for making plays with his legs."
That's high praise coming from Shanahan. Notice he focused primarily on Mayfield's quick decision making and ability to protect the football. That's high-level quarterback play according to the coach. Sounds a lot like Brock Purdy.
In addition, Shanahan praised Mayfield's arm strength -- "He can throw that ball. He can take three hitches and throw it late 60 yards down the field." That's specific praise, something Shanahan never has and never will say about Purdy, because Purdy can't do that. Sounds like Shanahan wishes he had a quarterback who could.
Sounds like Shanahan thinks Mayfield is better than Purdy.
