Another addition to the coaching staff.

The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly hiring former Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

As of now, it is unclear what role exactly the 49ers have hired Lombardi to do. That should be revealed soon, but I would guess that Lombardi will fill in for the departed Klint Kubiak as the 49ers passing game coordinator. Kubiak left the 49ers to become the offensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints.

Lombardi has officially come full circle during his NFL coaching career. The first team he ever worked for as a coach was with the 49ers back in 2013. He was the assistant to then head coach Jim Harbaugh, then would become an offensive assistant in 2014, a defensive assistant in 2015, and an offensive quality control coach in 2016 in his final year. Lombardi played musical chairs in his first stint with the 49ers in hindsight.

After his time in San Francisco, Lombardi wound up with the New York Jets as an offensive assistant from 2017 to 2018. He would then move on to the New England Patriots in 2019 where he was an assistant quarterbacks coach and a wide receivers coach in 2020 and 2021.

When Josh McDaniels became the head coach of the Raiders in 2022, Lombardi would follow him to become the offensive coordinator until he was fired with McDaniels in the middle of last season. Lombardi was never the play caller with the Raiders. Those duties lied with McDaniels during their Raiders tenure.

Again, I believe Lombardi will be hired as the passing game coordinator of the 49ers. At least, he will be given an assistant coach title the same as Anthony Lynn was before he left to join the Washington Commanders.
