In this story:

A replacement for former passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik is here for the San Francisco 49ers.

Klint Kubiak is being hired by the 49ers to their offensive staff in a presumed "top role" according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The fact that Kubiak is being hired following Slowik going to Houston to be their next offensive coordinator means that he is here to be Slowik's replacement. Perhaps he even ends up getting the full on offensive coordinator title as well.

Kubiak joins the 49ers, and his brother Klay Kubiak who is the assistant quarterbacks coach, after a stint with the Broncos in 2022 as their passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Before that, he was the offensive coordinator for the Vikings in 2021 when Mike Zimmer was the head coach.

The 49ers must've used the brotherly relation of Klint with Klay to draw him to the team. It was reported last week that the Texans were going to hire him as their run game coordinator alongside Slowik. But I would venture to guess that uniting with his brother Klay was a nice allure along with an offensive system he is familiar with that can win immediately.

This is why I believe Kubiak was hired to take on the vacant offensive coordinator position. It is an elevated position from being a simple run or pass game coordinator, so he will see an increase in pay and better opportunities in the future should he excel. Kyle Shanahan will always be the play caller of the 49ers, but the title of offensive coordinator does go a long way for a coach. Just ask Mike McDaniel who landed a head coaching job with the Dolphins from it.

Kubiak has nine seasons of NFL coaching experience, five seasons in two stints with the Vikings and four in two stints with the Broncos.
