49ers versus Rams will not be moved to primetime in week five

Prior to week four, there was some rumors that the San Francisco 49ers could be flexed into primetime on Sunday night against the Los Angeles Rams in week five. Now we can confirm that the primetime scenario will not happen.

Sorry to burst your bubble faithful, but any hope or chance of seeing the San Francisco 49ers get flexed into primetime against the Los Angeles Rams in week five is over.

Matt Barrows of The Athletic, confirms that the week five matchup will not be swung over into Sunday night. The originally scheduled game of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Chargers will remain.

It's kind of a head scratcher with that one because who in their right mind aside from their own fanbases would want to see Chargers and Steelers over a divisional matchup of 49ers and Rams?

Perhaps it was because the San Francisco 49ers are already slated for a primetime game on Monday night against the Cleveland Browns. It is not very often that a team will get back-to-back primetime games, especially an unproven 49ers team.

That is also another reason as to why the 49ers didn't get the nod for the flex. They could be viewed as just pretenders since they haven't really faced anyone threatening. That doesn't change the fact that the 49ers and Rams would be a hotly contested game.

With the Rams loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this past week, it makes the race in the NFC west very interesting. The Rams might not be sitting at the peak of the mountain anymore because they look to have come down to earth.

Regardless, the game will still be played and should be fierce matchup. It'll be a game that the San Francisco 49ers need to have in order to stake their claim for the division. Before they can worry about that, they must first handle business when they play host to the Browns on Monday night.
