49ers Training Camp: Could Tarvarius Moore be the answer at safety?

Safety Tarvarius Moore received first team reps today at practice as the competition at the position becomes tighter. Could Moore be the player that finally solidifies the position?

Another day of training camp is officially in the books for the San Francisco 49ers. The team will have the day off tomorrow, then come right back for some more action. One of the more interesting takeaways from today's practice was the insertion of Tarvarius Moore into the starting safety role. Moore received first teams reps during practice as defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is trying to see where his players fit.

The safety position is definitely one of, if not the weakest position on the team. There are just too many question marks regarding the position, especially after ranking dead last by Pro Football Focus on their grading scale. Perhaps the answer to the position is Tarvarius Moore. It is his natural and original position after all despite being a cornerback last season.

Moore was an exceptional safety in college during his days at Southern Mississippi. The fact that he was forced to play cornerback last season shows how desperate the 49ers were at the position. With the injury to Jimmie Ward, who was just activated off the PUP list today, it allows for Robert Saleh to tinker with the position.

The front seven of the 49ers is what brings the excitement, but if no one steps up at safety then some of their impact will be diminished. Let's not forget that the 49ers chose to skip out on Earl Thomas and Tyrann Mathieu because they felt they were set at the position. For their sake let's hope they are right because a lot of valid questions will be asked as to what they really saw.

At least with Tarvarius Moore there is a chance he can develop into a capable starter. Of course there are the likes of Adrien Colbert who has the talent, but he is coming off a poor season. Jimmie Ward will eventually find a role into the defense, but he is on a one year deal. It's not like investing so much time in him will be the best course of action for the 49ers.

Moore at least is still young and has so much promise at safety. Even Pro Football Focus views him as a solid safety, so there is hope with him. Keep an eye on Tarvarius Moore for the rest of camp because if he continues to see first team reps, then that means Saleh and the rest of coaches are seeing something they like. The competition at the position will only benefit these players in order for them to elevate their game.
