Are the 49ers Being "Sore Losers" With Their Grievances After Losing to the Eagles?

The 49ers are still not over their loss in the NFC Championship game to the Eagles.

It all started with Brandon Aiyuk who questioned how legitimate the Eagles' defense really was within the week of the loss. Once it got to Super Bowl week, that is where the floodgates opened with Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, and surprisingly Robbie Gould lamenting over the game. Here is some of what these players have been saying.

"You don't want to make excuses obviously,” said McCaffrey on the Kay Adams show. “It just sucks because we wish we had a healthy quarterback for a full game. It's a really good team that we played. But it feels like something got stolen from you."

"Our defense was doing what they were supposed to and I feel like if Brock was in at quarterback and how our offense moves, I don't think it would have been close if that makes sense," Samuel said.

Quite the scorn in the hearts of these players, which I’d imagine resonates with the rest of the team. So, are the 49ers being sore losers with their grievances about the NFC championship loss to the Eagles?

Not at all.

They just lost a game where they were on the doorstep of a Super Bowl appearance. That alone is devastating enough, but the fact that they lost in THAT fashion to the Eagles is what makes it agonizing. Going so far with massive success riding a 12-game winning streak into the NFC Championship game gave them a good chance to make it a game and possibly beat the Eagles on the road. That opportunity was immediately taken away on the opening offensive series of the game. It is all still fresh to them.

But what really validates them is the fact that they are being ASKED how their thoughts/feelings about the game. It is not like they are going on a tangent unprovoked to slander the Eagles or make excuses. Could they make their words appear better, so it doesn't make them look like sore losers? Sure. But again, this is where I emphasize losing in THAT fashion where they never stood a chance from the jump.

Having a healthy Brock Purdy is by no means a lock the 49ers win. They probably still lose. I had the Eagles winning that game within a score in my predictions, but at least the 49ers could have hung their hats on knowing they got to battle at their fullest. Instead, they were playing a conference championship game without the most influential position in football.

The only real gripe I have with the 49ers is their idea that if they had a third quarterback rostered that it would've enhanced their chances. That is where it is going way over the top for me since the game was dead once Purdy went out. There is no other quarterback the 49ers are bringing in along with Josh Johnson in December that would've made a difference. Decent quarterbacks just don't wait around in free agency to be signed late in the season.

Being labeled "sore losers" is over the top. The 49ers are not when they are being asked AND lost a game where it was over right when it started. If it was a close game with Purdy healthy and they lost, then I bet they wouldn't have a single grievance. They didn't last season when they lost to the Rams in the NFC championship game, so I doubt they'd maintain this tune if it was an actual game.
