When the NFL schedule was released, the week four bye week for the San Francisco 49ers was a less than ideal situation. However, as we enter week three of the regular season the bye week cannot come soon enough. With all of the ailing players the 49ers have it is just what they need to help get their players closer to 100%. Like with pass rusher Dee Ford who has been dealing with a knee injury since August.

This is the same knee issues that Ford dealt with during his time with the Kansas City Chiefs. Ford was held out of the preseason with the hope that he will be ready to go for the regular season. He performed well and looked healthy in week one, but he re-aggravated it last Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals. The 49ers are treating him with caution right now as they should.

Ford did not participate in practice today and will likely see very minimal action until Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's not like the 49ers need Ford during practice. His worth to the 49ers is strictly for Sundays. However, the reality is that Ford's knee issues may linger on for this entire season. How concerned should the 49ers be with his knee issue?

Well of course they should feel very concerned with it, but it is something that they should've been familiar with. It has been noted that Ford was having these problems with the Chiefs. That is likely the reason why they did not want to extend him because as much of a good player he is, his health concerns are real. Ford is a big time player on the 49ers pass rush, so they can't afford him to miss many games.

It cannot be overstated that the 49ers need to treat Ford and even Nick Bosa differently during the week. These two need to be on a limited basis during practice because if either them get injured and miss time, it'll be detrimental to the team. There isn't any depth on the edge for the 49ers, although Ronald Blair III has been an unsung hero through two games. It's never a good sign when a team is okay with trading away their homegrown player.

They know their player the best out of everyone and the Chiefs gave him away after his best season. I'm not saying the 49ers should feel some buyers remorse, but they need to be exceedingly cautious with Ford's knee issue. A misstep in his healing process cannot be afforded right now. Luckily, the bye week is just around the corner so Ford and many others who are ailing will be able to solidify themselves for the rest of the season.
