Trading for Jalen Ramsey would not be in the 49ers' best interest

Jalen Ramsey, one of the top defensive backs, is potentially on the trade market following a recent spat with head coach Doug Marrone. Ramsey is yet another defensive back to demand a trade. Does a trade for him make sense for the San Francisco 49ers?

Another defensive back has requested a trade from their current team. This time it is Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey. The former All-Pro corner got into a heated exchange on the sideline with head coach Doug Marrone in the middle of Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans.

Shorty after the game, Ramsey put in his demand for a trade away from the Jaguars. It might just be time for the two parties to separate as things have not been the same ever since 2017. Minkah Fitzpatrick was just traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, so Ramsey could very well be on his way out from Jacksonville.

Whoever trades for Ramsey will immediately have a better secondary. They will have gained one of the best, if not the best corner in the league. Someone who can easily take away an opposing offenses best receiving option . The San Francisco 49ers already have Richard Sherman for that, but he is known to sustain an injury as the season progresses.

Jason Verrett is also a huge question mark in terms of health and performance. Not to mention the lack of depth at the cornerback position outside of Sherman and Ahkello Witherspooon. With all things considered regarding the 49ers cornerbacks, should they look to trade for Jalen Ramsey?

Much like with my answer about Minkah Fitzpatrick, absolutely not. As much as I love the cornerback position and admire Ramsey’s talent, acquiring him via trade isn’t in the best interest of the 49ers. Ramsey is in a contract year and will be looking for teams to throw the bank vault at him that will aussredly make him the highest paid cornerback. The 49ers would just be wasting a top pick on a one-year rental with Ramsey.

I highly doubt he would be willing to take a discount either. Don’t forget that the San Francisco 49ers have to extend DeForest Buckner to a lucrative deal. They can’t afford to be splurging on a cornerback when a good pass rusher is more impactful than a great corner. Just look at how the 49ers defense has been performing these last two weeks.

The pass rush has given the secondary opportunities they never saw last season. They’re not being asked to stay in coverage as long either. Trading for Jalen Ramsey just isn’t the right call for the 49ers at the moment. Though it would make their defense much more scarier if they did.

They would have two corners who could erase receivers from the game. But the 49ers have to keep the bigger picture in mind. Investing in your pass rushers will always pay off more than heavily investing in one corner. I understand the temptation, but the 49ers should not target Ramsey in a trade.
