In this story:

Trading away Trey Lance could be in the works for the San Francisco 49ers.

Multiple teams have reportedly inquired with the 49ers in regard to Lance's availability. The 49ers are not actively shopping him, but they are at least willing to see what teams are offering. I sincerely doubt a trade for Lance goes down anytime soon as I have explained here in a previous article.

But should a trade go down, then it will be interesting to see where he goes and what the 49ers get in return. The value of Lance is one that is intriguing because he is a quarterback with untapped potential. Then again, he is coming off a significant injury and the 49ers no longer care if he can become their franchise starting quarterback.

So, what could the 49ers receive if they trade Lance away?

I don't envision anything higher than a fourth-round pick for Lance. Maybe even a couple of other picks to act as a kicker with one of them as a conditional pick that is based on Lance's playing time. I don't see how the 49ers could get a Day 2 draft pick for Lance. His value right now is really sunk and will only increase if he plays in the regular season. This is why I don't see a scenario where the 49ers pull the trigger on trading Lance away right now. The return in a trade just isn't worth it. Now is not the time for the 49ers to be getting rid of quarterbacks -- they need to be adding them.

If it wasn't for the fact that he is a quarterback who has mobility and a cannon arm, then he most likely wouldn't be attracting other teams. In fact, because his value is so low, it is exactly why teams are tapping the 49ers' shoulder to see if they can get them to part with him. It also doesn't help that the 49ers announced to the world that Brock Purdy is their starter, so of course this has other team's curious if they can reel in Lance via trade.

It is best for the 49ers to hold onto Lance. Let him get through OTAs, battle Sam Darnold in training camp, and knock off some rust in the preseason. Hopefully by then he will have convincingly proven to be better than Darnold and can become the starter barring the recovery timeline to Purdy. For all the 49ers know, he could end up showing he has made some strides of improvement. That is where it gets interesting. The 49ers will either have a strengthened quarterback room in that case, a new starter, or be able to trade Lance for significantly more than in April.

They'll never know unless they keep him, which is well worth it than a measly fourth round pick they would most likely get now.
