Why the 49ers must not give in to Robbie Gould's trade demands

The San Francisco 49ers have been steadfast when it comes to handling Robbie Gould's contract dispute. The 36 year old kicker is looking for a move from the team to be closer to his family, preferably with the Chicago Bears

Kicker Robbie Gould was placed on the franchise tag back in February and has not given any inclination to signing it. The tag, once signed, will guarantee about $5 million to Gould which would be an insane amount of money given to a kicker annually.

The money that is being given to Gould is one he should not pass up, but his motives are stronger than money. It's to be closer to his family during the NFL season, which is something a trade to the Chicago Bears can grant him.

As much as I admire his reasoning by no means can the San Francisco 49ers trade Robbie Gould. By giving into his demands the 49ers will have made it clear that all a player has to do is holdout and make a ruckus to be on the way out.

The chain of command would lose it's luster. This isn't the NBA where players can just demand a trade and get what they want. In the NFL, players are viewed as assets not commodities so the team has all the advantages. It's why the franchise tag is an option.

Regardless, the 49ers must not give in to Robbie Gould's demands.
