Byron Cowart signs one-year deal to challenge for Chicago roster spot at defensive tackle.

Free agency continued for the Bears by signing a potential 3-technique from the Miami Dolphins.

No, it wasn't Christian Wilkins.

Byron Cowart, who has started 14 games in three seasons, signed a one-year deal.

Cowart has one sack, five tackles for loss and 41 tackles in 36 total games played for the New England Patirots and Indianapolis Colts. His starts all came in 2020 for New England when it was using a 4-3 defense. He also has been with the Chiefs and Texans briefly but was released without playing therer.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pounder was a Patriots fifth-round selection in 2019 and got in five games as a rookie, without a start.

He spent all of last season and missed the entire 2021 season on the physically unable to perform list with an undisclosed injury.

The Bears roster currently has second-year defensive tackles Zacch Pickens and Gevon Dexter as possible 3-techniques but starter Justin Jones left in free agency for the Arizona Cardinals on a three-year $31 million contract.
