Bears and Colts Live Blog: Colts 21, Bears 16 FINAL

FOURTH QUARTER

Bears outgained Colts 395-306, 26 first downs to 15 and lost.

Taylor locks it up with a first down. Bears take the obligatory timeout. A nice call. Off tackle with one blocker pulling and leading. Not risky when all the defense was pointing inside. Didn't look like a college offensive play, like the Bears labeled the Colts offense last week. COLTS 21, BEARS 16 FINAL

TWO-MINUTE WARNING!!!! After a 3-yard Richardson run.

Bears got a break because Colts didn't try to return it. It allowed them to stop the clock one more time. Wow. They must be using the same coaching book the Bears are using. The Book of Squander.

Bears not trying for an onside kick. Dumb decision No., what is it? Twenty-six?

DJ Moore returns for a fourth-and-1 play and the ball goes to Cole Kmet, who is wide open for Williams' second career TD pass, a 6-yarder with 2:01 remaining. Colts 21, Bears 16

A completion to Carter but he fails to get the first down and the clock stops because Kwity Paye was hurt rushing on the pass.

DJ Moore and Kenny Moore both hurt on a slant Kenny broke up.

Ball at the 15 with 2:36 left.

Clutch third-and-12 throw to Odunze and he does a good job breaking away from Dallis Flowers, who is injured on the play. A first down in scoring range. Bears could score here but because they wasted a first down after their touchdown pass and because Eberflus burned one on the last Colts TD drive, they would have to use an onside kick. There is almost no chance of recovering an onside kick.

Caleb throws incomplete deep. Too often he looks like he's frantic with his throws. Roschon Johnson on a draw to the 32 for a first down but then Williams is sacked again.

Bears facing second-and-4 after a completion to Odunze, and Williams steps into a ball for the first down at the Colts 46. Bears in no-huddle mode.

Taylor weaves his way forward and into the end zone for the TD with 5:22 left. Colts 21, Bears 9

Taylor pounds to inside the 1 and the Bears call timeout.

Richardson runs down to the 2 for a first down but they managed to stop Taylor at the line on first down.

Strip sack on first play as Laiatu Latu from UCLA gets the former USC QB Caleb Williams from behind. Colts ball at the Bears 16.

Can they put together two straight touchdown drives? Just getting one was like pulling teeth.

Bears take over at their 17 after a punt and no one jumped offsides on it.

Colts face third-and-11 with 7: 11 left and Richardson scrambles a bit, throws deep but Kevin Byard comes across to nearly pick it before breaking it up.

Taylor gets a first down with a 6-yard run plus a penalty on the Bears.

Bears coaches were all signalling one-pointer after the TD first, which is inexcusable. But it didn't matter because the offense was celebrating too much.

Two-point doesn't have a chance and Bears trail 14-9. A 13-play, 70-yard drive to their second TD this year ends in a stupid two-point failure after an unncessary celerbration following the TD. Even six points come away tainted for this offense.

A 1-yard TD pass to Rome Odunze and Bears are celebrating wildly. They need to go for two and they waste a timeout to get organized. Should have been lining up for two right away. Instead they were all jacking around celebrating.

Yet another wide receiver screen from the old Luke Getsy playbook. Nothing there for DJ. But Caleb converts on third down with a pass to Kmet over the middle. A Colts offsides gives Bears first down inside the 2.

Kmet the big pickup on a 9-yard catch. Bears now at the Colts 15. They get only 3 on a run wide by Roschon but he punishes the tacklers and that's still a yard more than they had been getting.

Bears face third-and-7 after an incompletion to Odunze double-covered.

On third-and-5, Williams takes advantage of Kenny Moore being off the field to hit Odunze over the middle at the 27 for a first down.

Shane Waldron gets cute with an end-around and Moore is cornered for a 6-yard loss. Swift gets most of it back and more.

Swift turns a 6-yard loss left into a 4-yard run by cutting back and then Williams gets it to Kmet across midfield for a first down.

Bears finish the quarter with a first-down screen pass that goes for a first down to Swift. They finally gained more than 4 on a screen.

Apparently officials gave the offsides penalty to Daniel Hardy on the punt that triggered the TD drive.

Sermon on a 1-yard rugby scrum TD. His forward motion had stopped but they gave him the TD. Earlier, they called forward motion on a strip sack the Bears made and took it away. So, you can't have it both ways, but apparently the Colts can. Colts 14, Bears 3

Trey Sermon runs one in place of Taylor to the 4. Then Richardson plows ahead to the 1.

A 25-yard screen to Taylor. They couldn't get him going on the ground but did it on a screen and then he breaks a 20-yard run and the Bears are in big trouble.

Bears called for offsides on the punt and it's a first down. Matt Eberflus argues it's a head bob. But to no avail. They flagged Cole Kmet but he isn't even on the field.

Bears rally to the ball and the completion is well short of the first down so they'll punt again.

First down at the 20 and a short run. Kevin Byard up for a tackle. Then Montez Sweat tackles Taylor for a loss.

Another deep shot by Caleb and Odunze broke open but he overthrew Odunze by 10 yards. Bears punt, no one close to Taylor and he dubbed a 32-yarder. Not a good day for the Bears rookie punter.

Swift for 4 and 2 and it's third-and-4. No Roschon on the first two runs again. Just Swift.

They go for it and Taylor is jammed up a full yard short. DeMarcus Walker and Gervon Dexter with the big stop. Bears ball at their own 37.

Taylor runs up the middle for 2. It's fourth-and-3 and they're just outside of field goal range.

Billings leaves walking but losing him would be a terrible blow against a team with Taylor in the backfield.

Richardson scrambles and both Andrew Billings and Jaylon Johnson were shaken up on a gain near the Bears 40.

A WR screen. Fans upset saw facemask but it was the crown of the helmet that was touched.

Colts at the Bears 45. And they finally wised up and gave it to Taylor but an illegal shift wipes out an 8-yard run.

Jones makes second pick of the day on pass that bounced off of Odunze at the sidelines deep.

Colts arguing that the punt was touched so there should have been no penalty, meanwhile, Taylor got up and left the field. There was a challenge and the ruling stands. First down Bears by penalty. It was tough to see how it was touched. But the replay did show Taylor holding on the play and it wasn't called.

Tory Taylor wiped out on the punt and it should be 15 yards. Took his legs out. Delayed call infuriates the crowd but it was obviously unsportsmanlike conduct. Colts believe they touched the ball. Meantime Darrell Taylor is laying flat on his back in the end zone after blocking on the play. That's an injury they can't afford.

Third-and-8 at their own 18 after an incompletion on a short, panicked throw. Kenny Moore then blitzes and Williams is sacked back at the Bears 8.

Bears at the 16 and again running laterally with Odunze end around for only 2.

Bears start at their own 16. Again, they need to get the ground game going. When run as poorly as they have this year, you're going to have problems at the goal line like they have.

Third-and-3 after Bears allow another short completion and Richardson gets Taylor sprinting out of the backfield and overthrows him. An easy first down blown. Bears get it back.

Michael Pittman, Velus Jones Jr.'s ferret buddy, gets a 10-yard gain on a short pass.

Colts at their 26. And a false start against TE Mo Alie-Cox. Then they follow with Taylor's false start. First-and-20.

Guarantee Colts go back to the ground after that horrible pick Richardson threw. If it's me, I'm giving it to Taylor 10 straight times. He's tough to stop every time, the Colts block the run well and their quarterback is as likely to throw it to a Bear as a Colt.

Kmet back in the game and catches a 2-yard pass on third down, so they'll try a 53-yard Santos field goal. He makes it after a high snap by Daly. Colts 7, Bears 3

I've seen enough D'Andre Swift. Start Roschon Johnson.

Jaylon Johnson with the pick and then Williams with a spectacular spinorama completion to the Colts 37.

The Bears have managed to move the ball and resemble an offense, and Williams has been patient enough, but the red zone and scoring position in general have been problems. Williams is 16 of 27. Waldron throwing 27 times in the half when the offense is struggling with line changes is totally stupid.

Second Quarter

Bears 247 to 167 yardage edge, four scoring opportunities and they trail 7-0 at the half.

Cole Kmet injured on a pass to the 45. The Bears try a Hail Mary and DJ Moore catches it on the deflection but is at the 1. Bears come away again without a point.

First-down throw on the run negated by Braxton Jones holding penalty.

Williams slides on first-down scramble for the first down but they're not even to midfield and are out of timeouts with 31 seconds remaining.

Third-and-1 after a 9-yarder to Roschon and a timeout.

DJ for the first down at the 30 and OB. He already has five catches but they haven't been impactful.

A short completion and Colts face third-and-3 with 1:02 left at their own 31. Richardson with a horrible overthrow on a short pass for an easy first down. Although the Bears get it back on a punt, they have it on their own 17 with 51 seconds left in the half.

Colts get a first down and Gervon Dexter then forces Richardson to throw it away. Former middle school teammates. Dexter would have loved that sack.

Shane Getsy with a horrible fourth-and-goal call.

Option pitch. A horrendous call at the goal line. Swift is creamed and the drive ends with no points. That's three chances for points and they have zippo.

A run inside gets nothing by Herbert. Fourth and inches coming.

Herbert plods forward inside the 1 and Colts take second timeout.

First and goal play is a direct snap wildcat to Herbert and he gets to the 2.

First and goal at the 4.

Terrible spot on a catch by Cole Kmet. Should have been a first down. Instead of calling for it to be looked at, they rush to the line and Roschon Johnson gets the yard on fourth-and-1. I'd have challenged. A blind man could have spotted that ball better. The official on the opposite side of the field had it marked and was pointing where it belonged and instead they moved it back behind the first down. Regardless, Johnson poked his nose through the scrum to get the ball half a yard past the sticks. First-and-goal. TWO-MINUTE WARNING!!!

On second-and-9 from the 13, Swift powers off left guard and sets up third-and-4 at the Colts 9.

Jaylon Jones climbs up the back of Gerald Everett for a first down by pass interference at the 14.

Gerald Everett well covered in three-tight end formation on first down and could have been picked but only an incompletion.

DeAndre Carter catches a WR screen, breaks a tackle and gets the first down. DJ Moore was holding on the play but got away with it.

Rome with a big catch at the Colts 32 for a first down, nicely thrown. Then he throws a screen too hard to Swift for an incompletion. Should have been caught though.

Braxton Jones is back on this drive.

Roschon Johnson takes a sgort pass for the first down. Johnson is what they needed out there. He took it straight upfield and ran through a tackle for the first down.

Bears get 2 yards from Swift on a first-down run to the 31and then he loses it back. Third-and-long again.

Jonathan Taylor jump-cuts to the outside and takes it to the house. That's the big play you can expect at some point from a weapon like Taylor. The blown coverage set it up. The defense is getting gashed and the Bears offense isn't doing anything in support. Not a good combo. Colts 7, Bears 0

Tight end Kyle Branson with a 40-yard catch and run. No one near him in coverage. T.J. Edwards took the short receiver but no one was there for the tight end. You have to think a safety should have been there.

Colts from the 30 and Edmunds nicely forces Taylor back up into the waiting arms of Bears D-line for a 1-yard gain.

Two young quarterbacks in scoring position and neither team gets a point. The defense is going to have to rise up again for the Bears. Total buzz kill after the first bomb from Williams to fellow first-round pick Odunze.

Facing third-and-4. Jaylon Jones of the Colts reads Williams in a panic and picks him off along the sidelines. Bears are lucky Jones couldn't regain his balance or it was a pick-6. He fell OB. DeAndre Carter was blanketed. A field goal there by throwing the ball away would have been preferable. Probably the worst decision with the ball that Williams has made.

Quick strike, play action bomb to Rome Odunze. Just like in practice. All the way to the Colts 34.

The Bears redeemed themselves with a takeaway but Jaylon Johnson needed to take Pierce deep longer and Brisker should have been over quicker on the deep ball. When you're in zone on that deep pass no one should complete a pass that wide open. Pierce had to slow down and turn around to catch it and had no problem doing it.

Richardson in a panic nmoving left on an option pass and throws into triple coverage 5 yards away, right into the waiting arms of Tremaine Edmunds, the fifth Bears interception of the season. Touchback and the Bears get it at the 20. Wow. A horrible play by Richardson. Almost as bad as the plays Will Levis was making in the opener.

A textbook second-down tackle by Jack Sanborn leaves the Colts in third-and-goal. Wrapped up well.

Jaylon and Brisker beaten for a 44-yard gain to Alec Pierce, the Glenbard West grad. The Bears completely blew the coverage on that play. If the secondary is going to do that then the game is already lost.

After a 3-yard Taylor run, Austin Booker gets a tackle for loss to force thrid-and-10.

Tyrique Stevenson spins around the receiver then lets him go. It's not fishing, catch and release.

Colts to start at their own 39.

First Quarter

Bears end quarter with 5-1 edge in first downs, and no points.

Quarter ends after another poor punt and a 16-yard return by Gould for Colts. The quick screen was predictable on third-and-16. Don't need Williams getting decked from behind.

Nate Davis gets in the game after all and Pryor moves to left tackle. Makes more sense than using Kiran Amegadjie, who has no experience.

Williams holds it too long on second down and takes a 7-yard sack as he tries to get out of the pocket. Not really the fault of Teven Jenkins, who was blocking. Braxton Jones injured his knee on the play.

A quick 5-yard out to DJ Moore came after Williams changed something on the play at the line. A good move by the rookie QB. Then more tough inside running from Roschon Johnson for the first down. They need that element.

Carter eludes the gunner on the punt, then runs right into the traffic to his left side instead of going right where he had an opening. Bears starting out in a hole again at the 14.

D-line sniffed out a screen first down, then Montez Sweat with his first sack, a strip sack. And Andrew Billings recovered but the officials said forward motion stopped before DeMarcus Walker arrived and knocked it out of Richardson's hand. Instead it just goes for Sweat's first sack of the year and a screen can't pick up the first down. So The Bears get it back on fourth-and-7 on a punt.

On third-and-1 DeMarcus Walker can't stop the first down run but he did prevent a long gainer by tripping up Taylor from behind.

From the 17, Taylor nosed ahead 5 yards. Could have broke it but he was wrapped up as he tried to step out of the jam.

A rather poor 37-yard punt from Tory Taylor and the Colts have it back inside the 20. Taylor usually can get it down to the 10 on those.

Braxton Jones held but the Colts don't care because they had Williams running around in the pocket and he had to throw it away. So a punt from the Bears 47.

D'Andre Swift didn't get much, just 2 on second down, but put his head down nicely and ran hard, which he hasn't always seemed to want to do. Then an incompletion to Kmet and they're facing third-and-long again, like last week in the second half.

Another big penalty on the Colts for pass interference against DeAndre Carter, who had the route run perfectly and it's a first down for the Bears at the Bears 45.

Big Dog his second penalty in two weeks for a false start. Maybe they better stop giving him Thursdays off so he gets sharper.

Caleb Williams clobbered high after throwing on the run on first down so the Bears are out of the hole. a rough way to get out of the hole though.

Pass rush got nowhere near Anthony Richardson but he stepped up and threw wildly too high so the Bears get it back with a punt. If he just settled down and threw it, got his footwork down, he could be amazing. Bears take over at the 9 after the punt.

After the Colts get the penalty back on a run off right guard, a dropped pass leaves them in third-and-10.

Colts try a run-pass option on first down and botch it up for an ineligible man downfield. Quenton Nelson. But the play worked well. The Bears didn't defend it well at all.

The drive worked fine when they ran straight ahead at the Colts but they kept trying to get the edge and then either went backwards or a couple yards. The push still isn't there like they need in wide zone scheme and when you run straight up the middle it's going to be hit or miss all the time in the NFL because the linemen are too big, too good and the linebackers are too fast into the gap to allow it much.

Drive dies after an attempt by Williams to make a play on the run to his left but he can't hook up with Rome Odunze, then Cairo Santos misses from 56 yards short, his first miss of the year.

Good Good third-down conversion to Cole Kmet after Williams and DJ Moore had a very frustrating second-down play, like last week. Then Roschon Johnson plows inside. Just what they needed. 8 yards.

First play was right behind Pryor for 4. He had to turn around to check something before the play.

Bears receive and it's a touchback.

Pregame

GM Ryan Poles, in his pregame talk with Jeff Joniak for the ESPN AM-1000 pregame show, still believes in his offensive line and doesn't think the nine sacks allowed is a long-term problem.

"When you really watch the tape there's bits and pieces and different spaces that need to get cleaned up and our group has been challenged to figure that out," Poles told AM-1000.

He thinks the work done in practice the last week will make a difference in clarifying communications for the linemen. He said it's not a case of bad talent, which, of course, he picked.

Parroting Matt Eberflus on Keenan Allen from Friday, he thinks it won't be long before the veteran receiver is back from a plantar fasciitis problem. "He's been running and it's been coming together well this past week," Poles said.
