Bears Refuse to Reveal Kyler Gordon's Fate

Whether Kyler Gordon goes on injured reserve remained a mystery Wednesday, as coach Matt Eberflus would only say his cornerback is missing practice.

If the Bears are putting cornerback Kyler Gordon on injured reserve they're not saying ... yet.

Coach Matt Eberflus said their second-year defensive starter in the slot position wouldn't practice on Wednesday but would divulge nothing more about the injury other than to admit it was to the hand. This much was known after the game.

Gordon had his right hand wrapped and it was in a splint after Sunday's 38-20 loss to Green Bay. He left after getting in for 27 plays.

Last year as a rookie Gordon led all Bears cornerbacks and was second on the team with three interceptions for 14 games.

Eberflus wouldn't even say whether backup Josh Blackwell will play the vital slot cornerback position in Gordon's place if Gordon is out this week or for several weeks.

Blackwell is an undrafted free agent who was claimed off waivers at the end of preseason in 2022 after the Philadelphia Eagles waived him. Last season Blackwell played in 16 game and started just once—the Week 13 28-19 loss to Green Bay. He also played extensively in losses to Detroit and Buffalo and recorded 132 of his 133 defensive plays in those  games.

As a slot cornerback, Blackwell had a 101.9 passer rating against and allowed 76.8% completions when targeted, according to Sportradar.

"We're just looking at all of our options but in terms of with Blackwell himself, in terms of the comment about last year, it's invaluable to be able to be out there and know the position," Eberflus said. "As we said, there's a lot of detail to the position, that nickel spot, and he's done a good job in there.

"He's been a good special teamer for us and if we go that route he'll do a nice job."

More could be known after the team's daily injury report comes out following practice.
