Not Much Available Yet at QB

Unless a QB in his late 30s or someone who hasn't played in the NFL appeal to the Bears, they probably won't be interested in those waived on Monday.

In this story:

If the Bears are scouring the waiver wire for possible quarterbacks to bring in as a backup, they'll likely be unimpressed by what the net brought in on Monday.

The Bears have a backup with six NFL starts and one win in Nate Peterman, and another who is an undrafted rookie from Division II in Tyson Bagent.

Of course they'll be looking out for a possible experienced backup.

Coming in at this point without knowledge of the offense is a great negative, but putting a backup on the field who hasn't played in an NFL game might be more of a problem. Putting one out there with a career NFL passer rating of 39.4 like Peterman could be even a greater problem.

So if the Bears aren't interested in Carson Wentz, which is highly likely, here's what has been reported so far on the dropped quarterback wire.

Colt McCoy, Cardinals

By far the most experienced QB put onto the market on Monday, he has started 36 games and won 11, including a 2-1 season in 2021 when he might have been at his best. He had a 101.4 passer rating that year. McCoy did have four years with Washington in a West Coast style of attack not entirely different than what the Bears run but he's going to be 37 years old in a week. He really took to the offense Kliff Kingsbury ran but that isn't anything close to the Bears attack. He completed 71% of his passes the last two years (164 of 231) but for only 6.6 yards an attempt and had four TDs and four interceptions with an 87.2 passer rating for those two seasons.

John Wolford, Buccaneers

Bears fans may not recall it but they owe this 27-year-old passer some gratitude for the victory he authoredin his first NFL start, the final game of the 2020 season. On that day, his 22 of 38 for 231 yards with an interception was good enough for an 18-7 win by the Rams over Arizona and it put the Bears in the playoffs. They lost in New Orleans anyway but at least they got in at 8-8 because the Cardinals couldn't take care of business against Wolford, who was subbing for injured Jared Goff. Wolford is 61 of 104 (58.7%) for 626 yards with a TD and five interceptions for a 59.2 career passer rating.

Trace McSorley, Patriots

Undersized at 6-foot, 202, the Ravens gave up on him after two seasons and the new Cardinals regime didn't want him back. Bill Belichick has reportedly waived him now. He has played in nine games with one start and loss, while completing 45 of 83 for 412 yards with no touchdowns, five interceptions and a career passer rating of 48.8.

Chris Streveler, Jets

He's been around three years and completed 27 of 40 for 231 yards with a TD and interception (80.3 rating). Last year he was 10 of 15 for 90 yards in a game the Jets lost 19-3 to Jacksonville. Streveler can run a little. He has 75 yards on 16 rushes.

Jake Luton, Panthers

He was with practice squads for Seattle, Miami, Jacksonville and New Orleans the past two years and was reportedly cut by the Panthers after signing at the start of this training camp. A sixth-round pick of He completed 60 of 110 for 624 yards and two TDs with six interceptions.

Tanner Morgan, Steelers

The 24-year-old has never been in an NFL game.

James Blackman, Dolphins

A lanky (6-5, 190), undrafted former Florida State and Arkansas State QB who was trying to catch on with Miami as a rookie. He had 9,260 passing yards and 65 TDs to 33 interceptions in college.

Chase Garbers, Raiders

A Raiders practice squad QB all last year, he was released in late July, then brought back Aug. 1 but reportedly has been waived again. The 6-2, 215-pounder has yet to appear in an NFL game.
