Winners and Losers From Bengals' 34-31 Win Over the Jaguars on Monday Night Football

Cincinnati is 6-6 following Monday night's win.

The Bengals won an overtime thriller 34-31 against the Jaguars on Monday Night Football. Here are our winners and losers:

Winners

Jake Browning

The Bengals backup quarterback exceeded expectations on Monday night. Browning started the game very conservative, throwing mostly short passes early on in the first quarter. From the second quarter on, he played great football.

Browning ended the game with 354 yards and one passing touchdown as well as a rushing touchdown. The Bengals have been needing a quality backup for a while, and with Browning leading the Bengals to a win over a good team on the road in primetime, they might have their guy.

Chase Brown

Bengals fans have been hoping to see their rookie running back get some action ever since he returned from his hamstring injury, and he got involved fairly often against the Jaguars.

Brown carried the ball nine times for 61 yards for an average of 6.8 yards per carry. Hopefully the rookie can continue to be a big piece of the Bengals offense down the stretch.

Joe Mixon

The veteran running back had one of his better games of the 2023 season on Monday night, finishing with 117 total yards and two touchdowns against the Jaguars.

Despite a great game from a rookie running back behind him, this game is actually a huge positive for Mixon. Even if Brown keeps it up and earns more and more snaps, Mixon proved him and Brown can be a dangerous duo for the Bengals running game. Hopefully these two can share some carries the rest of the season so we can get an idea of what the Bengals rushing attack could look like next season.

Zac Taylor

A lot has been said about Taylor’s play calling this season, but he put together a good plan for Browning and the Bengals offense on Monday night.

These games to end out the season are crucial for their offensive scheme moving forward. With Joe Burrow having a head set and working with the offense, him and Taylor working together could be very helpful for the team when he returns next season.

Bengals Offensive Line

Despite giving up a couple sacks, the Bengals offensive line looked much improved against Jacksonville. They held up often and gave Browning time to make plays from the pocket.

The offensive line in Cincinnati has been the center of many conversations the past several years, so their play over the next several games will be under the microscope, even if Burrow isn’t playing. Games like tonight will help the team figure out what to do long term and plan for Burrow’s return next season.

Ja’Marr Chase

The superstar receiver proved why he’s one of the best in the NFL on Monday Night Football. Without his star quarterback, Chase put on a show, catching 11 passes for 149 yards and a touchdown.

The team will continue to rely on their elite receiver down the stretch, especially with Browning at quarterback.

Evan McPherson

The Bengals kicker missed one early, but he made up for it with a 54 yarder to take the lead in the fourth and another game-winner in overtime.

Losers

DJ Turner II

The Bengals rookie has been great this season, but he had a rough night against the Jaguars. Turner had some struggles in coverage and also had some rookie moments like not falling on a fumble late in the fourth quarter.

I don’t believe there is anything to worry about with Turner. He’s been good up to this point and he certainly has the athletic abilities to be a good cornerback in the NFL. Bengals fans can chalk up this game from Turner as a rookie moment.

Trick Plays

The Bengals offense looked very good against a tough Jacksonville defense aside from two plays. Early on, the Bengals tried to get creative drawing up a pass from Chase to Browning which resulted in a loss of eight yards.

In the third quarter, the Bengals attempted yet another wide receiver pass, this time from Tyler Boyd. The play failed and Boyd threw an interception to the Jaguars which later resulted in a touchdown. There’s not much to worry about long term with these plays, but they certainly hurt the team in their game tonight.
