Dohnte Meyers Checks Another Box in Bid to Make Bengals Roster

Dohnte Meyers has exceeded expectations as he attempts to crack the Bengals final roster this season. The wide receiver added to his offseason accomplishments by making an electric kick return during a joint practice with the Chicago Bears that likely would have been a touchdown in a live game.

Video was prohibited once position drills ended, but Local 12 Reporter Yanni Tragellis covered Meyers standout return.

"When the ball is in Dohnte Meyer’s hands big plays keep on happening, just fielded a kickoff return, found a seam around the 25," Tragellis tweeted. "Likely would’ve had a 1-on-1 chance to make a man miss around the 40 and take it for a TD if this was a game and they were playing live."

When lined up as a receiver, Meyers has consistently made big plays when the ball is in his hands. His clearest path to the final roster, however, remains making plays as a returner over the likes of Charlie Jones and Ke'Shawn Williams.

The receiving room for the Bengals is full of talent. With Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Andrei Iosivas, Mitchell Tinsley, and Colbie Young all vying for roles at this point, the sixth spot likely comes down to who can contribute as a returner.

Young Receivers Have Locker Room's Attention

Meyers will have plenty of eyes on him during the Bengals second preseason game, along with Colbie Young. Tee Higgins confirmed this after the joint practice, when asked who he would be looking forward to watching during the game.

“Colbie (Young) and 8-1,” Higgins said when asked where his attention will be on Saturday.

Young has made his mark since training camp began and is battling for playing time with the starting offense at this point alongside Iosivas and Tinsley.

Meyers, on the other hand, is continuing to fight with Jones and Williams for the final spot in the room. His ability to make plays as a receiver may already put him above those he is competing with. If he can start consistently making standout plays as a returner, he should cement his place on the roster.
