'No One Wants Him! Bills Should Sign QB Cam Newton as Josh Allen Backup - PFT

"Newton would bring a skillset that better meshes with Josh Allen. Newton’s mobility would allow one playbook for both quarterbacks, instead of plays for Allen and plays for the understudy who lacks Allen’s mobility.'' - PFT's Mike Florio on why the Bills should sign Cam.

Cam Newton has a big idea.

But the NFL is offering a tiny response.

Actually, more tiny than "tiny,'' as Mike Florio at ProFootballTalk.com writes, "No one wants him.''

That seems harsh. But the unemployed Newton's boast - "Ain't 32 m*****f******s better than me,'' adding via a video that "these randoms keep getting jobs" in the league while he cannot get work - didn't help. Nor did his recent performance at Auburn's Pro Day.

But Newton, 33 and a former league MVP who hasn't played in the NFL since 2021, nevertheless has his wish list.

And the Buffalo Bills are on it.

Additionally, for whatever it's worth, PFT's Florio - harsh as his reflections on Newton's employability are - has an idea that meshes with Cam's.

Josh Allen's Bills should, Florio says, hire Cam as his backup.

"It needs to be the right one, for the team and for him,'' Florio writes. "The two that seem to make the most sense are the Bills and Chiefs.

"In Buffalo, Newton would bring a skillset that better meshes with Josh Allen. Newton’s mobility would allow one playbook for both quarterbacks, instead of plays for Allen and plays for the understudy who lacks Allen’s mobility.''

We won't argue against that logic. But it's interesting that for whatever reason, the teams and the people who know Cam best have all passed on this idea as Newton as a happy backup.

Why didn't Bill Belichick keep him in New England to work behind Mac Jones?

Why hasn't Washington coach Ron Rivera, who coached Cam to his greatest year ever as the MVP QB in Carolina who made the Super Bowl, hired him?

Why hasn't Buffalo coach Sean McDermott, who was the defensive coordinator in Carolina for a time under Rivera, made the phone call?

We have theorized that one problem with signing Newton as a backup is that he has a larger-than-life personality and that he truly wouldn't be happy in the job. Additionally, his flashy presence could become a distraction ... and his talent is just enough to create a "quarterback controversy'' if the starter falters at all.

Many teams opt to have the backup QB serve as part of the "support system'' for the starter; that is precisely the point of the Bills this spring signing Kyle Allen, who is clearly a No. 2 and who is also one of Josh Allen's (no relation) best pals.

Additionally, Newton has thrown more interceptions (15) than touchdown passes (12) over his list two NFL stints. It's unclear what Newton has left as a passer at this stage. (Indeed, Cam as a passer has always been erratic.)

Could Allen and McDermott and the Bills fix all of that? Maybe. But it doesn't matter if they don't want to.
