Bills Hire DJ Mangas as Offensive Quality Control Coach

The Buffalo Bills made a late addition to their 2024 coaching staff, making sure assistant coach DJ Mangas returned with a full-time promotion in hand.

The Buffalo Bills have gone through a handful of changes to the coaching staff in their attempt to catch the Kansas City Chiefs atop the AFC. Among the changes to Bills head coach Sean McDermott’s staff was the promotion of Bobby Babich to defensive coordinator and removing the interim tag from offensive coordinator Joe Brady.

In turn, Brady has had a chance to leave his fingerprints on the rest of the offensive staff.

On Monday, that continued when Buffalo hired DJ Mangas to be a permanent fixture as an offensive quality control coach.

Mangas joined the Bills in a similar role in the middle of the 2023 season and was retained for the upcoming season. He spent the first portion of 2023 with the University of Buffalo, where he was the offensive coordinator and tight ends coach.

This is Mangas’ second NFL stint in the NFL, his first coming with the Carolina Panthers in 2020, where he was Brady’s assistant.

That wasn’t his first run-in with Brady, though. The two have a long history together. They were teammates at William & Mary and were position coaches in 2014 together after graduating.

While Brady would leave for Penn State, Mangas stayed at home, rising from running backs coach to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

In 2019, he found Brady again, this time at Louisiana State University. Armed with quarterback Joe Burrow and receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, the offense carried the Tigers to a national championship.

Mangas returned to LSU after his one-year stint in Carolina to become the passing-game coordinator but switched to the other side of the ball a year later when he was a defensive analyst for UCF.

He’ll look to benefit from the continuity this offseason will provide to best prepare quarterback Josh Allen and an offense that has immense potential. With the progress Brady helped make with the ground game, there’s optimism that this staff can buffer the challenges the offseason may bring as free agency approaches.
