Bills 'Greedy'? Jim Kelly Implores Buffalo to Add 'Star' RB

Bills legend Jim Kelly offered a candid response when discussing Buffalo's rushing attack.

Last season, the Buffalo Bills once again fielded one of the NFL's best offenses, averaging 28.4 points per game, good for second in the league, on 374.2 yards of total offense.

However, as potent as the Bills offense was, there was one weakness - an inconsistent rushing attack.

As a result Bills' legend Jim Kelly insisted that Buffalo go get star quarterback Josh Allen help at the running back position.

"Josh (Allen) can't do everything by himself, and I hope they find a way to get a star running back," Kelly said in an interview News 10 NBC Rochester.

Yes, the Bills rushed for 131.3 yards per game, but Allen was a large part of that. Take away Allen's 762 rushing yards and that average plummets to 86.5 yards per game on the ground.

To make matters worse the Bills leading rusher, running back Devin Singletary, left in free agency this offseason to sign a one-year deal with the Houston Texans, a move which Kelly was not fond of.

"I always thought (Devin) Singletary was pretty good -- I just didn't think we used him enough," Kelly said.

With Singletary departing for the Texans, the Bills lost 819 rushing yards and five touchdowns from last season's total. Of course, they still have Allen who is an elite runner, but relying on him to carry that heavy of a load rushing wise could be harmful in the long-term for his health

The Bills did sign a running back this offseason, bringing in former New England Patriots running back Damien Harris on a one-year deal. That might not be the only move they make, though, to improve the position.

Buffalo, barring a pre-draft trade, owns the No. 27 overall pick in the first round of next month's draft and could use said pick on a running back - with Texas' Bijan Robinson a popular selection for the Bills in mock drafts.

"When you've got a guy as good as Josh Allen, you tend to probably get a little greedy," Kelly said. "You want to use him more than you probably should, but (offensive coordinator) Ken Dorsey is doing a great job."

Allen will continue to be an elite runner, and with him at quarterback the Bills will always have a respectable rushing attack. However, for Allen's health both in the short and long-term, it could benefit Buffalo to listen to Kelly's advice and get its quarterback a star running back.
