Allen, Bills Offense Look To Get Back On Track Against Miami

Buffalo's passing game ranks 24th in the NFL

"We didn't score enough points today."

That has been Sean McDermott's go-to line following each of the Bills' three losses this season. 

The same sentiment was shared following Buffalo's 19-16 loss to Cleveland last week.

And, if you take a look at the numbers - it's the truth.

Buffalo currently ranks 25th overall in average points scored per game - with 19.3. But, in losses that number is even more concerning, putting an average of just 13 points up on the scoreboard.

There is a bright side though, while Buffalo looks to get their offense back on track. The Bills next two opponents - Miami and Denver rank even worse with 13.2 and 16.6 average points per game, respectively. 

So, what can the Bills do? Is the blame on second-year quarterback Josh Allen? McDermott said the entire offense needs to continue to evolve.

"I am confident in Josh," McDermott said. "Whether it is Josh or any other player in this case, whatever their job is they have to execute their job. We have to continue to bring Josh along and also realize he is in his second year. So, it is a blend of how do we grow? And evolve? And develop at the right pace."

Allen's numbers have been a concern. Through nine games, Allen is averaging 213 yards passing - that ranks 29th in the league. His 10 passing touchdowns rank 23rd overall. 

Of course, Allen has redeemed himself on the ground where he has scored six times, including twice against Cleveland, carrying the ball. The only other signal caller with that many rushing touchdowns is Baltimore's Lamar Jackson.

In order for the Bills offense to click - Allen will need some help from his surrounding cast.

"Every offense would say they want more yardage and more chunk plays," Allen remarked when being asked about his struggling passing game - specifically his deep ball passes. "Obviously those are nice and we have had opportunities and I haven't done a good enough job capitalizing on them. You don't want to live and die by the deep ball and the chunk yardage."

Allen and the Bills offense will have a big opportunity to get back on track against a Miami team that is allowing almost 400 yards per game to opposing offenses. 

In Buffalo's first meeting against Miami, they had one of their best offensive performances of the season - putting up 319 yards of total offense in a 31-21 win. The 31 points are the most the Bills have scored this season.

The Bills visit the Dolphins on Sunday at 1 p.m.
