Bills Watch as Dolphins Investigate Trade for Jonathan Taylor, Josh Jacobs

Superstars have become increasingly available as teams look to the discount rack at running back. As a result, the Miami Dolphins have reportedly checked in on Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor and Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs.

Both could cause trouble for a Buffalo Bills team looking to win its fourth consecutive division title. Could it put pressure Buffalo into making a move?

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel inadvertently added fuel to the rumors with his recent comments.

“It’s a valuable position that you have to have depth at,” McDaniel said. “It’s a big portion of your touches.”

He mocked the speculation circulating in South Florida, comparing it to something his toddler could have written. Miami was linked to running back Dalvin Cook early this offseason.

“Every player in the National Football League is coming to the Dolphins,” he joked.

Still, Taylor and Jacobs have expressed displeasure with their current teams’ performance at the negotiating table. McDaniel’s Dolphins feel like a nice fit.

Miami is the fastest offense in football. Running backs Raheem Mostert and De'Von Achane both ran sub-4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash. However, they lack an every-down back with a proven track record.

Taylor boasts the same speed the Dolphins covet and the production to back it up. He led the league in rushing in 2021, and last year accumulated 861 yards in 11 games. An ankle injury clouds his projection, but at 24 years old, the short-term future seems bright.

Jacobs, the rushing champion last season, brings a dimension of power running that Miami lacks. He led the league in touches last year. The opportunity to run into fewer light boxes, a luxury the Dolphins’ speed provides, is likely as attractive as the year-round warm weather.

The era of the super impactful running back may be over, but the margins are razor thin in the AFC East arms race. Buffalo went 2-1 against Miami last season, including a playoff victory against backup quarterback Skylar Thompson. Their wins came by a combined six points.

The Bills will have to wait until Week 4 to face the Dolphins. For now, it’s a game of wait-and-see if the Dolphins adds a dynamite runner to their explosive offense.
