The moment Tre'Quan Smith was released by the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday, many a fan (only half-jokingly) assumed the veteran wide receiver would end up in Denver, reuniting with head coach Sean Payton.

They weren't wrong. 9NEWS' Mike Klis reports the Broncos will bring in Smith for a visit Wednesday night and have him undergo a physical Thursday — a potential prelude to said reunion.

Then-Saints coach Payton helped select Smith, 27, in the third round of the 2018 draft. The former UCF standout made 51 appearances (29 starts) during his four seasons under Payton, snagging 112 passes for 1,486 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Despite their history, however, it's difficult to imagine where Smith would fit in if pen is put to paper. The Broncos have Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton entrenched atop the depth chart, with fellow NOLA alum Lil'Jordan Humphrey and the increasingly-progressing Brandon Johnson pulling up the rear.

There's also the matter of explosive rookie WR Marvin Mims Jr., who leads the NFL in yards per catch (27.9) entering Week 4 — and whose 16-snap per-game average is likely to skyrocket in the months ahead.

It, too, should be noted that Smith was cut from injured reserve after suffering a groin injury. Even when healthy, he'd be little more than a familiar face for Payton and the several ex-Saints imports who now call the Mile High City home.
