Former Broncos QB Teddy Bridgewater Lands with Lions

Bridgewater started 14 games for Denver in 2021.

Two years removed from his stint with the Denver Broncos, veteran quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is moving on to the Motor City.

The Detroit Lions on Monday signed Bridgewater to serve as a backup behind starting QB Jared Goff. The deal reportedly came together following a July workout and months-long interest from the organization.

"The #Lions have checked in on Teddy Bridgewater since March, maintaining steady interest," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted. "In late July, they finally hosted him on a visit. And today, a deal gets done."

A one-time Pro Bowler and former first-round pick, Bridgewater spent the 2021 campaign with the Broncos. He started 14 games, completing 66.9% of his passes for 3,052 yards, 18 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, finishing on injured reserve due to a concussion.

Bridgewater, 30, took his talents to Miami last season and made five appearances, including two starts, in place of injured Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa.

In Detroit, Bridgewater — who's also played for the Vikings and Panthers — reunites with head coach Dan Campbell, familiar from their time together with the Saints (2018-19).

"When you're with somebody for two years, you get a really good feel of what they're capable of. The way they're wired. The way he thinks," Campbell told reporters Tuesday. "I've seen him work. I've seen him run the offense. I've seen him in critical moments. I've seen him develop young talent, young receivers. We lost [Drew] Brees, he goes 5-0. He went in there and kept the ship afloat, kept the heading right where we needed it. That means a lot to me. And that's all we need."
