The Denver Broncos are "expected to have an interest" in signing Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Thursday. Cook will officially be released by the Minnesota Vikings on Friday barring a last-minute trade.

Schefter added that Denver has been monitoring Cook's status for "weeks," during which time they've waived three RBs and freed up significant salary-cap space.

The 27-year-old will have multiple suitors as an unrestricted free agent, including the Miami Dolphins, which purportedly "came very close" to acquiring Cook in March.

Schefter's report dovetails with that of 9NEWS' Mike Klis, who said Tuesday "there's no way" the Broncos trade for Cook — but might "make a phone call" if cut. The call would come from general manager George Paton, the former Vikings executive who helped draft Cook in 2017.

One of the league's top backs, Cook has rushed for 5,993 yards and 47 touchdowns across six seasons, averaging 4.7 career yards per carry with four-consecutive 1,000-yard campaigns. He's also chipped in 1,794 receiving yards and five TDs on 221 receptions.

Cook struggled through a shoulder issue in 2022 but is now fully healthy after undergoing corrective surgery. Should he resurface in Denver, the four-time Pro Bowler will form an imposing backfield currently dominated by Javonte Williams and Samaje Perine.
