Buccaneers GM Jason Licht Comments on Signing Free Agent Safety Jordan Whitehead

Tampa Bay Buccaneers GM Jason Licht spoke on signing Jordan Whitehead back to the team after two years in New York with the Jets.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a fantastic free agency thus far into the 2024 offseason. They have kept key members from their 2023 team, made a trade that has netted them an extra third-round pick in the upcoming NFL draft and brought back a pivotal component from their Super Bowl run in 2020 signing safety Jordan Whitehead to a two-year deal.

The Buccaneers made the signing of Whitehead official on Thursday afternoon prior to Whitehead speaking with the media, and the franchise's general manager Jason Licht is happy to have Antoine Winfield Jr.'s partner in crime back in Tampa Bay.

"Adding Jordan back to our defensive backfield is a big addition for us and we are all excited to get him back in the building," said Licht. "Jordan is a thumper, who sets the tone with his physicality and effort, and he was a key member of our Super Bowl defense. He is an ideal fit for a Todd Bowles defense and while we hated to see him leave two years ago, today we got our guy back."

Whitehead is a good NFL safety and has shown the ability to always be around the ball and making plays. He occasionally will allow a big play, but he always plays off his instincts. His familiarity with head coach Todd Bowles' defense and relationship with Antoine Winfield will only bring out the best of the veteran DB.

Whitehead is coming off a season-high in interceptions with four and has compiled 478 tackles (29 TFL), 2.5 sacks, 11 interceptions, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries in his career thus far.
