Panthers Request Interview With Buccaneers' Assistant for General Manager Position
We are just a couple of weeks away from Jason Licht's 10-year anniversary as the General Manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It's been a great tenure for Licht, who in addition to delivering the franchise its second Lombardi Trophy, has shown great consistency in his player personnel decisions in the draft and free agency. Another highlight of Jason Licht's time in Tampa has been the team's shrewd and forward-thinking approach to negotiating contracts and managing the salary cap.
But when it comes to doling out credit for Tampa Bay's cap management over the years, look no further than Licht's assistant GM, Mike Greenberg, who has proven to be a salary cap wizard for the Buccaneers. Although Greenberg didn't receive a ton of public acknowledgment prior to Licht's arrival in 2014, he's actually been with the franchise since 2010.
Described by many around the organization as the 'Capologist' for the Buccaneers, Greenberg is kind of like the team's secret weapon. At least within the front office.
But apparently, the secret is out.
The Carolina Panthers, who recently fired their own General Manager, Scott Fitterer, have requested permission from the Buccaneers to interview Mike Greenberg for the position.
The news was first reported by Peter Schrager of FOX and the NFL Network.
There's no denying the fact that losing Mike Greenberg would be a major loss for the Buccaneers' front office. Losing him to another NFC South team would sting that much more.
At the same time, Greenberg has put in more than enough time and effort — while achieving great success in the process — to deserve an opportunity to take the next step in his career.
