The majority of teams around the league are eyeing the beginning of preseason action this weekend. That has clubs continuing to evaluate their rosters ahead of the 2023 season.

On Tuesday, the San Francisco 49ers announced that they were signing veteran running back Jeremy McNichols to a contract following a workout. The team waived undrafted rookie Ronald Awatt to make room for him on the roster.

This will actually be McNichols' second stint with the 49ers. He was signed to the team's practice squad in 2017 and appeared sparingly in two games before being released prior to the following season. McNichols didn't end up recording a statistic with San Francisco.

The former Boise State star was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He struggled during training camp and ended up being a surprise cut before the beginning of the season. The 49ers picked him up two days later.

McNichols will be suiting up for his ninth team in seven years. He's only had one stint with a franchise last longer than a single season; a run in 2020-21 with the Tennessee Titans. Most of his time has been spent bouncing around on practice squads and offseason rosters.

The 5-foot-9 running back has totaled 90 carries for 364 yards (4.0 YPC) and a rushing touchdown in 34 career appearances. He's also caught 40 passes for 295 yards and another score.

McNichols was a two-time second-team All-Mountain West selection at Boise State. He rushed 571 times for 3,205 yards and 44 touchdowns while scoring 11 more times through the air with the Broncos.
