Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is set to return at some point in 2023 - we just don't know when.

It feels like an eternity since Murray went down on Monday Night Football against the New England Patriots in Week 12 of 2022. The Cardinals were all but out of the postseason picture at that time, and Murray's injury only dampened an already sour season in the desert.

Working under a new coaching staff and front office, the overall direction of the franchise appears to be in good hands moving forward. The biggest question mark - arguably - now resides in Murray. When will he return, and what will he look like after initially stepping on the field?

The Cardinals are in the beginning stage of a rebuild under a new regime, and there's two major quarterback prospects expected to enter the 2024 NFL Draft. In short, there's a lot riding on Murray this season before the organization enters an offseason that could potentially change the trajectory of the franchise.

Compare.bet and Cardinals insider Kyle Odegard says Murray is pushing his way to an early return, though the team wants to take their time with his recovery:

"The Cardinals’ star quarterback is in the midst of his ACL recovery and is pushing to return to action as early as possible, according to a source with close knowledge of the situation," wrote Odegard.

"However, the new coaching staff in Arizona has been trying to manage those expectations, intent on taking a measured approach to ensure there is a low chance of re-injury.

"Murray tore his ACL in a December 12 game against the New England Patriots and had surgery on January 3. He began straight-line running a couple weeks ago and has not suffered any setbacks, the source said."

Odegard also reported the following:

  • Murray has been "attacking" his rehab
  • Murray is "excited" to see how he fits under new OC Drew Petzing's offense, which will feature him playing under center.
  • "If it were up to Murray, a return to action would come as soon as he felt able, but the Cardinals want to be mindful of his long-term future when that decision is made."

There's a possibility that Murray could begin the season on the PUP list, which would put him out for the first six weeks of the regular season.

However, it sounds as if Murray is trying to push his way to return earlier than some anticipated. His ACL tear was reportedly clean but fans also must remember he tore his meniscus as well vs. New England.

As with all, time will eventually tell when Murray again takes the field. We'll see if Murray can convince his coaches he's ready to return sooner than once thought.
