Kyler Murray: I Didn't Feel Cardinals Were Looking For Next QB

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray says he didn't feel like the team was looking for an upgrade at the position.

ARIZONA -- When you're 3-11, little players should feel safe about their job security.

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is one of them.

Months ago while he was rehabbing a torn ACL/meniscus, plenty of rumors/smoke floated on both the future of Murray and what direction the organization would take.

Those feel like a distant memory.

Murray hasn't quite performed at MVP levels, though he's put to rest much of the narrative of Arizona taking a look at draft prospects such as Drake Maye or Caleb Williams.

The Cardinals could very well do their homework on passers entering the 2024 NFL Draft, though from the outside, it appears he's done enough to cement himself moving into next year.

Murray was asked if he felt the Cardinals were ever evaluating other options:

“I don’t think that’s everybody’s situation, but no, I personally don’t feel that way. Also, I dealt with the whole thing last year. It’s a situation that you all know about. I don’t feel that way. I’m worried about playing football," he said.

Facing the Chicago Bears this week, fellow quarterback Justin Fields finds himself in a similar position Murray once did.

“I don’t know as far as if it’s unwarranted or warranted or what’s going on over there. I don’t know. I think when you’re not winning, everybody wants to look for the next thing, but the guys in the locker room— I saw something this week, so those guys I think they believe in him," Murray said on Fields.

"That’s really all you can ask for (that) the guys that you’re going to war with believe in you. Again, for him, I’m sure he’s trying to prove himself every time he touches the field. In this profession, football, basketball, baseball—it doesn’t matter they’re trying to replace you in a sense. It’s on you to make them realize or make them understand what type of player you are and that they’ve got something in you.”

That's a similar sentiment repeated from earlier this season, when Murray took ownership of his situation and said "it's on me" to prove himself:

With two first-round picks in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Cardinals have a few different avenues they can go. Their 13 draft picks also includes six picks in the first three rounds, so there's hope Arizona can right the ship with another strong offseason.
