Chargers News: LA Head Coach Commends Joshua Palmer's Growth with Herbert and Elite Status

In this story:

The Los Angeles Chargers' offense is as complete as can be. Their quarterback is possibly the most talented in the league Justin Herbert and is locked down till the end of the decade; running back Austin Ekeler is the most versatile player in the game, and their offensive line has the potential to be the best in the league this season.

All signs point to a great year on that side of the ball if key pieces are healthy. However, those position groups above may not even be the team's best when considering the wide receiver room. LA is stacked with many talented receivers who have been great for Herbert and the squad.

There is no shortage of talent for these pass catchers, and although Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and rookie Quentin Johnston have been getting the shine, the talent level doesn't stop there. Joshua Palmer, the fourth and possibly the most consistent for the Bolts in terms of health, has been great for the squad.

Palmer will be entering his third year with the team and has established himself as a critical piece to the team. He's grown on the field and off, and even though he's just getting started, head coach Brandon Staley thinks highly of him, going so far as to call him an 'elite player.'

“We feel like Josh is an elite player,” Chargers coach Brandon Staley said. “Our entire coaching staff will tell you the same. Through two years, he’s done a lot for us. Last year, over 70 catches. He’s a very complete receiver. You can line him up anywhere. He’s outstanding in the release game. He’s very strong."

The 23-year-old came up huge in 2022, with Williams and Allen missing some time. He started in 11 of the 16 games and completed 72 catches for 769 yards, three touchdowns, and had a catching percentage of 67.3%.

Not only did he get a chance to shine, but his relationship with Herbert grew exponentially. Staley recognizes that, and it's carried into training camp.

“I think where he’s improved is his trust game with Justin."

“There’s a trust factor,” Staley said. “Justin will wait for him. Justin now knows where he can hit Josh in that sweet spot. Josh is a very, very complete player and he is a weapon and we’re excited to have him. When you add ‘Q’ (Quentin Johnston), that makes you tough to defend.”

The three-year player is not expected to start at the moment, but if worst comes to worst, you know he will be prepared to do what's necessary. Regardless, he will shine in any role given to him.
