Chargers Rumors: Chances Of Bill Belichick Taking Head Coaching Gig Are Slim

Even before Brandon Staley was canned this week, one Hall of Fame name kept being floated as a potential replacement for the man who kicked off the season as your Los Angeles Chargers' head coach: current New England Patriots leader Bill Belichick.

Unfortunately, league sources inform Armando Salguero of Outkick that the odds of Belichick assuming the gig are looking slim. Salguero notes that this is due in part to disinterest on the Bolts' side of the equation to add the six-time Super Bowl champ, which is a bit insane.

Belichick is in the midst of a truly terrible season piloting New England, currently the worst team in the AFC (yes, worse than even the Chargers). Though it seems apparent that his best talent appraisal days may be behind him (he is simultaneously the Pats' general manager as well as their head coach), he still has the tools to be one of the NFL's elite coaches. In a situation where he could theoretically just focus on leading a team on the field rather than molding it in the front office, he could be an intriguing option.

LA is clearly loaded with talent, but the club has had trouble stringing much together in the Justin Herbert era. The team has one blown wild card loss to its credit, as far as postseason experience goes. But veteran Pro Bowlers Keenan Allen and Khalil Mack can still do damage on both sides of the ball. Star wide receiver Mike Williams has been hurt most of the year, but assuming he returns to form healthy next season he could be a major impact piece, as could running back Austin Ekeler, who's had a down season.

Theoretically, the Bolts have the personnel to be a solid playoff threat. But in practice, we haven't seen the pieces gel. A veteran coach is needed to get them there.
