Report: Washington Commanders Request to Interview KC Chiefs' Mike Borgonzi

Amid quite a bit of change in D.C., the franchise is requesting to interview one of the Chiefs' top executives for a front office position.

The Kansas City Chiefs' recent success as a franchise has naturally made their players, coaches and executives priority candidates for new positions with other teams. This hiring cycle will be no different, as the Washington Commanders are getting off to a quick start in their search for new organizational leadership.

Per a Monday morning report from Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Commanders have requested permission to interview Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi for their general manager position.

Commanders requested permission to interview Chiefs' assistant GM Mike Borgonzi for their general manager job, per source.

The exact depth and reach of Washington's positions are tricky, as it was reported by Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports that interview permission for Borgonzi was requested for a "new head of football operations position." The majority of reports, however, fall in line with Schefter's description of a general manager spot in D.C.

With owner Josh Harris and company firing now-former head coach Ron Rivera on Monday morning, there's a set of sweeping changes going through the Commanders organization. One of those could pertain to current general manager Martin Mayhew, too, as his position and surrounding jobs are being evaluated as things stand. Harris has an advisory committee consisting of names like Bob Myers and Rick Spielman — two high-achieving executives in the NBA and NFL, respectively — to assist in the search for a new head coach. The football operations department and new general manager, if hired, will subsequently work with whichever candidate is selected.

Borgonzi is currently wrapping up his 15th season with the Chiefs. He's been the franchise's assistant general manager since 2021. He has experience as Kansas City's director of football operations and director/co-director of player personnel as well. His current duties include leading scouting directives, working on in-season roster decisions with general manager Brett Veach, navigating things like free agency and the NFL Draft and much more. Should he interview with and depart for Washington, he'd leave huge shoes to fill on Kansas City's executive staff.
