Mahomes doesn't think anyone should have negative things to say about his former OC.

Patrick Mahomes: ‘No Questions’ About Eric Bieniemy’s Greatness

In this story:

Eric Bieniemy has been a popular name over the past week-plus, as the former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator was introduced on Thursday as the assistant head coach and offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders. While Bieniemy's new job came with mostly rave reviews from peers and both current and former players, one of them wasn't too convinced the 53-year-old is going to succeed and that struck a chord with another.

Speaking on a Monday edition of Fox Sports 1's program Speak for Yourself, former Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy shared his thoughts on the Bieniemy hire. Talking about his former OC, McCoy questioned his value in the new role and said while he doesn't want Bieniemy to fail, he believes he's going to. Here's more:

"See the problem is, a lot of these people who go on social media [say], ‘Oh, he should be the guy for the job.’ They haven’t played there, they’re not in the locker room. They’ve not been in the rooms where he’s coaching. He has nothing to do with the passing game at all. The plays are designed, that’s Andy Reid. When you’re talking about offensive coordinators, I can tell you what makes Brian Daboll with the Giants a very good (head coach). I can tell you what Andy Reid or Doug Pederson [do well], but when I ask about Eric Bieniemy, what makes him good?"

Following his introductory press conference on Thursday, Bieniemy was asked about McCoy's comments. Opting to take the high road, he tipped his cap to McCoy as a future Hall of Famer who has an opinion and added that everything going on or said outside the Commanders organization "has no impact" on him as things proceed. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes quote-tweeted a clip of Bieniemy's response, saying that "there should be no questions on how great of a man/coach Coach Bieniemy is." Mahomes's full tweet is below:

Mahomes is one of several Chiefs to back Bieniemy throughout his entire journey as a prospective head coaching candidate, and both he and head coach Andy Reid endorsed him right up until the Commanders hired him in a lesser role. Additionally, former Chiefs such as Jamaal Charles, Tyrann Mathieu and Tyreek Hill all expressed via Twitter that they disagree with McCoy's assessment(s) of Bieniemy. It's becoming obvious that McCoy is in the minority here.

Despite Bieniemy's contract expiring at the end of the 2021-22 campaign, Kansas City opted to bring him back for another year in the same position. That decision ended up paying off, as Mahomes played some of the best football of his career and helped a new-look Chiefs offense get all the way to a Super Bowl LVII victory against the Philadelphia Eagles. That win sent Bieniemy on his way as a two-time champion, and the fact that Mahomes is still supporting him even after his days with the Chiefs goes to show that there aren't many folks tied to the organization who share the same negative feelings as McCoy.
