Commanders GM Adam Peters 'Feels Really Good' About Sam Howell

New Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters has revealed that he and Sam Howell have recently been getting to know each other.

Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell endured a difficult season last year as he was thrust into the starting role for Eric Bieniemy's offense.

While Howell showed glimpses of his talent, he also showed the raw nature of his game as several costly mistakes would see games lost. The Commanders finished the regular season with a 4-13 record and as such, now hold the No. 2 overall pick.

The consensus is that Washington will select a quarterback, leaving the future of Howell with the organization under a serious cloud. But general manager Adam Peters has revealed that the franchise doesn't know what it is doing with the No. 2 overall pick, while also having some kind words for Howell as well.

“We still have a lot of work to do what we're going to do whether it's that pick or later, we really like what we have in [QB] Sam [Howell] right now, so we're really excited about that too,” Peters said. “It's funny, I learned this from [San Francisco 49ers GM] John Lynch. When you're sitting in your office all day, you kind of just get in this rut where you're just like, it's dark, you got all these weird lights and you need to get out. So Sam came to the facility a couple weeks ago and got a chance to hang out and instead of sitting in my office, we just took a walk, took a walk around Commanders Park around the fields and got to know him a little bit better. So I feel really good about him too. So, we got a lot of different things we can do, but still really excited about him.”

So reading between the lines here, Howell's future with the organization looks solid, but depending on what way the franchise goes in the draft, perhaps Howell could still be a backup for whoever is selected.

Either way, the No. 2 overall pick is a big domino that has to fall and then the Commanders will get a good lay of the land. Also, Howell is still on his rookie contract, so he isn't costing Washington much at all.

Having Howell, who now has a year of starting experience under his belt as a softer cushion for the Commanders to fall back on could be seen as helpful by the front office.

Exactly what Washington does this offseason will captivate the collective mind and while all eyes are firmly entrenched on what it will do with the No. 2 pick, what becomes of Howell is also a point of interest.

Peters says he's "excited" about Howell, and in the coming weeks and months, we will get a clearer indication of exactly what he means.
