Commanders Defense Looking to Improve in 2023?

The Washington Commanders defense under Jack Del Rio was a bright spot last season, with the unit expected to again improve. But Daron Payne's contract status still looms large.

The Washington Commanders were good value for the majority of last season.

While the 8-8-1 record doesn't suggest a great year on paper, the Commanders had a playoff spot almost wrapped up before fumbling down the stretch.

A primary reason why Washington was in such a commanding position was due to defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio and his unit. The defense finished the year seventh in points allowed (20.2/game) and was 11th in sacks (43).

Additionally, of the 52 red zone attempts from opposing teams, Washington only gave up touchdowns on 27 of those trips (51.9 percent, ranks 8th). They were also the sixth-best regarding penalties in the league, committing 85 for the year, which averages out to just five a game.

Can we expect more of that next season?

That is the hope, but a lot of that hinges on the future of defensive star Daron Payne. Set to become one of the most sought-after free agents after his 11.5 sack, Pro Bowl season, Washington needs to keep its star.

Payne led the team in sacks, tackles for loss (18) and was second in quarterback hits (20). He must be signed.

Ideally, expectations for Del Rio's unit are much of the same. Washington transitioned to a defense-first football team last year due to uncertainty at the quarterback position.

The defense kept them in games, as they kept opposing offenses to 20 points or under seven times.

With the likes of Payne (hopefully), Montez Sweat (8.5 sacks), Jonathan Allen (7.5 sacks) and a solid secondary, expect the Commanders to again improve under Del Rio.

In truth, they have to, as second-year quarterback Sam Howell looks to be the starter (barring a free-agent splash), so the defense will need pressure and takeaways to keep themselves in games.

If the Commanders can stay the course with Howell, who is now under Eric Bieniemy's guidance, and keep Payne while others improve, there is no reason to suggest that this isn't a playoff team in 2023.
