The Washington Commanders are moving their business operations away from FedExField.

With much-maligned former owner Daniel Snyder selling the franchise to Josh Harris in July of this year, the Commanders say that they have "13 new sponsors, a 20% increase in the team's season-ticket holder base and sellouts of all 2023 home games to date." The move, per the team, will allow the Commanders to "meet greater demand for suites while expanding the franchise's footprint in the state of Maryland."

“Commanders fans are eager to support their team and we’re dedicated to ensuring the best experience possible both on and off the field,” team president Jason Wright said Friday. “Moving our headquarters will provide exciting new spaces to take in home games and will provide for greater collaboration for our business staff and partnership with the University of Maryland.”

Wright, coach Ron Rivera and general manager Martin Mayhew were all inherited by Harris' ownership group. Given the increasingly disappointing 4-9 campaign that the Commanders are in the midst of, it's entirely possible that none of that trio will be with the team as they make the transition.

Nonetheless, it's an interesting move and serves as a reminder that despite $40 million in investments to upgrade FedExField announced in August, the stadium continues to not be up to the standards of a modern NFL facility. While the Commanders have called Landover, Maryland home since 1997, you do wonder if a move back to D.C. -- perhaps to the site of RFK Stadium -- will be the long-term plan for the franchise.
